Seems plausible to me that the decline of competitive districts drives (at least in part) our bonkers political reality.
A lot of scholars agree with you (as do I). Competition brings better ideas. While there's no perfect solution, I lean towards anti-gerrymandering laws and open primaries as plausible solutions to getting better elected officials.
